Removal of ribs, also known as rib resection
Rib removal, also known as rib resection, has gained popularity in recent years. The hourglass figure and slim waistline have once again become aesthetic ideals. A slim waist accentuates femininity, enhancing the chest and hip curves.
While in Victorian fashion, this was achieved through corsets with tight lacing, today it can be accomplished surgically by removing the “floating” lower ribs, numbers 11 and 12.
Rib removal surgery is complex. Ribs are closely connected to adjacent organs, and improper execution can risk damaging these organs. Rib resection is usually considered for treating various pathologies, such as cervical ribs and rib slipping syndrome.
The lower pairs of ribs protect internal organs by softening impacts and shielding the kidneys, adrenal glands, spleen, and liver from harm. Rib removal surgery may lead to complications like hemothorax and pneumothorax. Furthermore, the lower lateral chest wall defect may result in up to a 42% loss of lung function.
However, there is a minimally invasive surgical method for waist correction that preserves the ribs—rib remodeling. This technique is atraumatic, has a short recovery period, and delivers significant clinical results. The waist reduction surgery does not involve rib removal but instead stabilizes the ribs in a new position using a corset.
Surgical waist shaping by bending the ribs
Surgical waist shaping through rib bending is a modern modification of rib removal. This method is safer and more organ-preserving. The ribs are retained, and the lung volume is not reduced. The patient recovers more quickly and without pain.
A corset must be worn for at least two months after the surgery to ensure that the rib fragments are stabilized as they change their curvature. This helps the lower part of the ribcage form a smooth, aesthetic narrowing.
In the traditional surgery, if a woman wanted to achieve a beautiful, sexy waist, the 11th and 12th pairs of ribs, which do not participate actively in breathing, were removed. With the new method, the bones are not removed. The surgeon adjusts their position and shape to reduce the waist by up to 10 cm.
Often, to achieve the “hourglass” figure, waist shaping surgery is complemented by liposuction of the abdomen, lipofilling of the breasts, and lipofilling of the buttocks. Fat is removed using the safest liposuction method in the world — nutation liposuction from EUROMI (Belgium). This technique precisely targets fat cells with its cannula tip, without damaging other tissues, making it the least traumatic of all liposuction methods. Moreover, nutation ultrasound liposuction has the fastest recovery and the best fat retention rate, which is crucial for lipofilling.
It is important to note that if you plan to become pregnant after waist shaping surgery, the effects of the procedure may be diminished after childbirth.
Contraindications
- active lifestyle, extreme sports;
- pregnancy planning. Carrying a child and giving birth without a pair or with modified false ribs are very complex processes;
- tuberculosis in any form;
- fever;
- blood clotting disorders;
- mental disorders;
- obesity stage 2-3 (need to lose weight or undergo liposuction before surgery);
- congenital renal prolapse.
